Cross D Horse Training

We accept all breeds, ages and disciplines of horses. During training we strive to provide your horse with a well-rounded foundation, focusing on softness and responsiveness, which can be carried into any discipline.

Length of Training:

We offer 30 or 60 day training periods. Please view our 30 Day Training Goals Outline for a rough guideline of what we expect to teach your horse during the first month. Typically the first 30 days are used to give your horse a good foundation, develop respect and control on the ground as well as the basic tools you and your horse will need for riding. For more advanced training issues - such as gaiting, lateral work, handling trail obstacles, etc - we recommend you use the 60 day option so we can address those areas during the second month.

As stated in the 30 Day Training Goals Outline:  Progress is highly dependent on the personality, experience, and readiness of the horse. Some horses will take longer to work through certain exercises and we will work with you to develop an individualized plan that suits you and your horse.  Older horses that are coming for a refresher course will still be started at the ground level and worked through all of the exercises to make sure we don’t miss any behavioral and training issues that might need work.  After the first week with your horse we can evaluate exactly where your horse is on the training scale and give you a better idea of practical goals and a timeline of training needed.

Client Involvement:

An essential part of the horse training process is showing the horse owner exactly what the horse knows and how to ask for it. We encourage clients to watch at least 1-2 training sessions and to participate in a free lesson toward the end of the training period. Our goal is for  you to feel confident in working with your horse when the training period is over.

Considerations for Age of Horse:

Level of training is also dependent on the age and maturity of the horse. 30 days of just groundwork (and acceptance of tack) is available for colts too young to handle a rider. Around 2 years of age most horses are ready for an introduction to saddle and rider, but consideration will be taken in length of intensity of riding sessions. Unbroke older horses are also welcome, please contact us to discuss the specifics of your horse.

Other Requirements and Considerations:

We require all training horses to be current on vaccinations, deworming, and coggins. We accept shod and unshod horses, if any trimming is required we are happy to provide a barefoot trim for $25. If horses are barefoot and show any tenderness for hard surfaces they can also wear barefoot Trail Boots.

If any signs of lameness or discomfort due to teeth or other physical issues develop we will contact you and develop a plan for addressing those needs before continuing training. If any emergencies occur we will contact you and the veterinarian immediately and any vet charges will be billed to you. Please do not bring your horse for training if there are any obvious signs of unsoundness or poor health.
