Throwing the Rope & Stopping
Goal: To have the horse relax, slow down, and eventually stop while having the rope thrown over their back.
- While the horse is trotting in a circle around you start throwing the end of the lunge line over their back. Keep going until the horse relaxes and stops.
- Don't make the horse stop, let him find the stop.
- You don't want the horse to spin around to face you when he stops, he needs to stop on the circle.
- For more nervous horses you can allow them to stop a little crooked at first, just walk toward their front end to push it back out and continue throwing the rope at them for a while.
- It might take about 3 days for a horse to really get the concept.
